Why You Never Want To Eat Non-Organic Foods Again
For most of human history, food was produced organically, in private gardens and farms. In recent decades, however, the use of pesticides in food production has not only increased, but has become common practice. But while plenty of people still do not see the fine line between organic and inorganic food, that fine line can actually spell the difference between health and sickness.
What’s organic?
Organic foods are those that are produced through standards that require approximately 90 percent of the plant food, fertilizers, and pesticides to be made from organic materials. This means that man-made or synthetic chemicals are not used in growing the plants and animals used in food. Non-organic food, however, is made using a variety of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, or from plants and animals that have been genetically modified.
Non-organic’s claim to fame
The transition from organic to non-organic food is fueled by the belief that non-organic food production results in larger crops and faster animal growth. But while the harvests may increase momentarily, the effects of non-organic food production is great in terms of the health and environment.
Danger in the supermarket
Visit your local supermarket, and most of the food items that are sold are doused in chemicals such as organochlorine hydrocarbons that can accumulate in the body and cause nerves to transmit impulses nonstop, leading to death when enough has accumulated in the body. Another type of commonly used pesticide in farms is carbamates, which can cause paralysis.
And it isn’t just the vegetables that are steeped in chemicals. Non-organic animal meat is also processed using preservatives such as benzoates which can lead to brain damage, BHA and BHT which causes cancer in lab mice, glutamates that can lead to brain damage and palpitations, nitrates and nitrates that cause cancer, and glycerides that have been known to cause birth defects.
Poisoned pellets
Apart from the processing used to preserve the meat, the actual feeds used in major cattle ranches includes chemicals that bloat the animals to make these ready for slaughter at an early age. These chemicals, however, are known to cause genetic mutations that lead to obese and very unhealthy cattle. After slaughter, anesthetics, nitrates, and nitrosamines are often injected into the animals to keep the flesh red.
One way street
The problem? Once the chemicals have been introduced into the animals and plants through poisoned pellets, fertilizers, and pesticides, the chemicals are essentially impossible to wash off. Standard cooking procedures can eliminate bacteria, but the chemicals present in non-organic foods do not disintegrate with heat and cooking.
Food and health
From cancer to heart problems, people today face a variety of health problems and one of the primary factors that contribute to the increasing health risks is the type of food that you take in. The next time you shop for your food, think about the boxed, packaged, canned, and processed foods that you buy. It’s not always enough to check the nutrient labels on the packaging – food companies will not tell you what pellets and pesticides have been used to grow these processed foods, even if little or no preservatives have been used.
Even the planet is at risk
When pesticides are used, it is not only pests that die, but birds, insects, and microorganisms in the soil which all contribute to a living ecological niche, and which provides natural fertilizers that plants and animals use to survive. Even worse, pesticides usually leave the earth unusable after several planting seasons.
Americans today channel up to 90 percent of their food budget on processed food. By purchasing organic food, however, you do not only remove the toxins and chemicals that processed non-organic food is steeped in, but also help in protecting the environment.
