Big Breakfast Diet

Starting out with the most important meal of the day, breakfast could lose the unnecessary fats according to Dr. Daniela Jakubowicz.
Dr. Daniela Jakubowicz, a US researcher, claims that a small breakfast could actually increase food cravings all throughout the day. For people on a journey to weight loss, having such would work against their goal. So what now is the solution? It’s simply the opposite of it—big breakfast!
The Study
Virginia Commonwealth University researcher Dr. Jakubowicz has been able to prove for herself how a big breakfast works for her patients. Big breakfast means that she recommends to her patients a healthy breakfast with more carbohydrates. She was observing the difference between her patients as opposed to women who were taking low carbohydrate diet. This was done in her study involving 96 physically inactive and overweight women. The diet had 1,085 calories in a day and most of it came from fat and protein.
With her big breakfast diet, there were more calories involved, 1,240 at that. The calories involved less fat and more of protein and carbohydrates. In this diet, breakfast contained more calories summing up to 610 calories involving carbohydrates with 58 grams. Lunch only contained 395 calories while dinner had 235 calories.
Small vs. Big
As the study continued, the patients in a low-carb diet showed to have lost more pounds than those in a ‘big breakfast’ diet after four months. The latter lost 23 pounds as compared to the 28-pound weight loss for the low-carb dieters. This appeared to be a failure in the study but in the long run, ‘big breakfast’ diet appeared to be more effective.
In eight months, the study showed significant improvements. ‘Big breakfast’ dieters lost an average of 16.5 pounds. Surprisingly, the low-carb dieters regained an average of 18 pounds.
With these reports, could this be another diet fad?
Is this a new hope for the obese society or another false hope like any diet fad? By the look of the book, anyone would get the impression of just another marketing stunt designed to victimize those wanting to lose weight. But not all first impressions last. In this case, first impressions may not really apply especially after the proof of the study.
In a nutshell, the concept of ‘Big Breakfast’ is simple. It’s not always the food that matters in a diet, it’s when you eat it. It’s not about whether you eat a lot or not, it’s when you eat a lot. With ‘Big Breakfast’ diet, subscribers are encouraged to eat breakfast with a high amount of carbohydrates but less of fats. Then for the rest of the day, the subscriber is expected to become less hungry. That means that the dieter would crave for lesser amount of food all throughout the day decreasing the intake of calories daily.
What does it say about the norm?
Eating is not a routine, it’s also a social activity for most of the people. This is the norm and with the entry of ‘Big Breakfast’ concept, there needs to be a cultural adjustment to the future subscribers of the diet. Imagine this! While everyone is ordering steak or pasta for dinner, you will just order salad. Salad for dinner while everyone else is taking a heavy one. And it’s not just simple dinner, it’s a usual occasion when friends and families take a big break from a long day.
‘Big Breakfast’ diet is out to make another trend. But will it remain a fad? Like any other fad, it will vanish at some point if it doesn’t work for many. On the contrary, its efficacy will take it to heights.
