Liquid Diet
A Liquid Diet is a form of diet, which is either partially or entirely in liquid form, which is usually taken in a tea or juice form. Originally, Liquid Diets were meant to be taken before and after bariatric surgery, preparing the patient for the surgery, and easing them out of it. Most of these types of diets cannot be a suitable form of sustenance for a long period of time, but its effectiveness in weight loss is well documented.
Obesity will and always has been a problem, causing a variety of health problems. Not only does it cause a number of health problems, it is the cause of social ridicule as well. People suffering from this condition have always been the subject of scrutiny, resulting to more excessive eating, which makes the problem much worse. Liquid Diets have been known to solve numerous cases of obesity.
Most doctors will not make their patients go through a Liquid Diet, not unless the patient has to undergo a procedure involving a colonoscopy and a sigmoidoscopy. In cases such as this, pre-operation, a Liquid Diet is needed for flushing the bowels, and at the same time, reducing the stress on the patient’s digestive system, when the actual operation takes place. The permitted beverages are as follows: sports drinks (Gatorade and the like), tea, coffee, and broth. Fruit juices are also allowed, as long as the juice is initially strained.
Before the Liquid Diet takes place, a doctor will provide detailed instructions and information that entails the proper procedure, and the duration in which the diet is to go on for. Normally, patients who will undergo a bariatric surgery in the future will have to go on an all-Liquid Diet for a period of ten days, before the actual surgery takes place.
In a few cases of extreme obesity, individuals are required to undertake a Liquid Diet. Initially, the diet can be exceptionally effective, but the procedure must be under the watchful eye of a professional or doctor, to ensure the safety of the patient, and to avoid any harmful side-effects. However, it is generally believed that the Liquid Diet’s approach does little in instilling awareness on the proper and healthy methods of eating to maintain and ensure weight loss.
On a nutritionist’s standpoint, Liquid Diets do little in providing the body with the essential nutrients and sufficient energy requirements, needed to sustain itself. The diet is a method of weight loss, which provides quick results, but as soon as certain elements, like protein shakes, are weaned from the diet, the dreaded weight has a tendency to be gained as soon as it is lost. In most situations, the consumption of liquids in place of solids, despite being under the watchful eye of medical specialists, is not recommended for long-term use, if the amount of weight to be lost is only at a minimum.
It is a misinformed premise that fluids flushes out unwanted toxins from the system, and clears the liver off of sediment build-ups. The truth is, no matter what one takes in, as long as the substance is processed, it will not make any difference. Consuming beverages will not provide the body with the vitamins, fibers, proteins, and other elements essential in optimizing health. In the long run, Liquid Diets will be inadequate in providing nutrients vital in building up resistances, leaving the body wide open to infections and diseases.
The truth is, Liquid Diets are extremely effective in quickly losing excess pounds, but once the desired weight is lost, a proper and healthy diet should be incorporated. Yes, the diet is a quick fix to weight loss, but should only be the initial step to a healthier lifestyle.
