Fasting
What is Fasting And How Does It Helps Our Body to Detox?
Fasting is a sacred honored tradition in many religious and cultural circles. In its purest form, fasting is the act of abstaining from food or drink, or both. Often, abstaining from food or water is accompanied by significant inner reflection and prayer. When used properly, fasting can help your body’s natural detoxification process and can jumpstart your way back to health.
How Does Fasting Come about?
For thousands of years people have recognized the medical and mental health benefits of fasting. In ancient times, fasting served as a religious experience. Fasting was used to fully focus communal energy into prayer and spiritual experiences. Ancient cultures also used fasting to commemorate tragedies and significant social events. These ancient peoples recognized that there was something special about fasting.
Today, there are many non-religious reasons to fast. Fasting helps the body detoxify and is the cornerstone for jumpstarting your body back to health. The most popular form of fasting is the water fast, which serves as one of the most efficient ways to detoxify your tissues and blood. This involves total abstinence from food, while continuing consumption of water (and water alone- no soda or juice). A typical water fast can last from 3 days to 10 days, and even longer if under medical supervision.
How Does Water Fasting Works?
By now you may be wondering how water fasting works its magic within your body. First, water fasting forces your body to delve into stores of energy that it normally wouldn’t (since you’re not eating food). This frees up lipid cells that have been dormant for years, storing both good and bad substances. As your body frees up its lipid stores, it uses the energy and releases the toxins from those lipids.
As it frees the toxins, your body immediately begins to detoxify itself. During the first few days of water fast, people usually feel rather ill as their bodies release toxins from their lipid cells. After all, these toxins have been stored inside your lipid cells for years, even decades, as by-products of “junk food” and the Western lifestyle. These symptoms include gastrointestinal upset, fever, headache, neuromuscular weakness and fatigue. After a few days of toxin onslaught, these symptoms clear up and the body finishes detoxifying itself.
What Are The Benefits Of Water Fasting?
Water fasting also replenishes the body’s source of vital life energy- water! Water holds the sacred flow of life within it. Without water, the human body cannot function, repair or sustain. Drinking nothing but water renews the body’s building blocks with fresh raw material (oxygen and hydrogen) to renew itself. Water fasting flushes your cells with this fresh material and forces the old toxins and chemicals into the bloodstream. There, they are detoxified by the liver, kidneys and skin.
Water fasting is a challenging but very rewarding method of total body renewal. Once you have completed a longer fast, you can maintain your new level of health by using smaller water fasts. Every few weeks or so, 1-3 days on a water fast will help keep your body “in tune” and detoxified. And of course, proper diet and lifestyle will contribute to keeping your body free and clear of toxin accumulation.
