Do You Need To Eat Slower?

Today in the fast moving world, we don’t have time to sit and spare much time to eating our food properly. We all are so busy that having a meal is nothing more than just another job to be finished. But this is completely wrong, as there are a number of benefits of eating slowly.
Digest the food better: Do you remember your elders telling you to chew your food properly when you were a kid? They used to emphasize that gobbling up of food is not correct. One must enjoy what one is eating. Actually, when the food is placed in the mouth, we start chewing it and when this chewing is done slowly and properly, the body gets plenty of time to break down the food eaten by us. Therefore the food gets properly digested. It also helps in preventing indigestion and you don’t feel bloated after having a meal.
Losing weight: When you eat slowly, you eat less. Yes, it is a fact that has been proved. The reason behind it is that when the food is eaten slowly you feel ‘full’ much before you finish the amount of food you use to eat earlier. ‘Fullness’ is related to the number of times you chew and the time you spend on eating and also the look of the food along with the quantity. So a slow eater will feel full even with less.
Enjoying your food more: We spend so much of time in preparing a meal why do we finish it off in a matter of few minutes? Food is meant to be enjoyed. Spend a lot of time in savoring all your favorite foods especially if you get to eat them occasionally. You can enjoy and relish the flavor; the smell and the look of your food and that will make your eating more enjoyable.
Improve your social circle: A person who eats slowly is able to give proper attentions to things happening around him. If you are with your friends or family, you can chat with them and share the events in their lives. In this busy world the time spent with them will not only improve your social life but it will also bring you closer to them. Be careful to talk during the meal but not while eating and remember that eating in front of a TV is a big no.
Focus on eating: don’t we all have our breakfasts while reading the newspapers or going through our favorite blogs at that time? How do you expect to savor the flavors, texture and taste of the food if your concentration is not on it? We often see people having their food and working at the same time. All this is not right for your health. When you are eating, just eat and don’t let your attention get diverted towards some work or any reading material.
Stop you from over-eating: When you are eating, the stomach sends a signal to the brain that it is full in about 20 minutes. You get this feeling of fullness when your stomach starts stretching. A slow eater will start feeling full with less food as compared to a fast eater. So eating slowly stops you from over-eating.
