Our Body – The Natural Detoxification System
By admin | May 23, 2008
The human body is a remarkable work of biology designed to maintain homeostasis. Whenever something inside the human body deviates from what is natural, the body will counteract biologically to return to normal. The best example of this is the natural temperature regulation of the human body. When we become too cold, we shiver. This produces natural body heat which returns our body to its comfortable 98.6 degrees. When we are too hot, we sweat so that air can wick away our excess heat with evaporative cooling.
Just as the body wants to maintain its ideal body temperature, the body also wants to maintain its natural health. One of the ways the body maintains health is through its detoxification system, which rids of the body of chemical and biological media that does not occur naturally within the biological system. Detoxification is a whole-body process- all the organs must work together to effectively detoxify the entire body.
Natural body detoxification begins in the lungs and skin. With every breath you take, your body exchanges “old” oxygen for new oxygen. The oxygen you consume immediately enters your bloodstream, and cycles throughout your entire body. With each exhalation, you release carbon dioxide and toxin-laced water which can quickly poison your body. Your skin takes lipid-soluble toxins (stored in fatty tissue under the dermis) and turns them into water-soluble salts and minerals, which you sweat from your pores.
The next most important part of your body’s natural detoxification cycle is the liver. The liver contains very important Kupffer cells which specifically target toxins delivered in the bloodstream from the body. The liver cycles blood primarily from the digestive tract. The highly specialized cells in the liver act as a sieve as blood flows through the liver to catch toxins that would kill the body. From the liver, these poisons are excreted to the kidneys through the blood system.
When the kidneys receive toxins from the liver, they produce metabolites. These metabolites convert dangerous toxins (such as drugs) into materials that can be excreted. The kidneys also contain very specialized cells that act as a sieve for blood passing through, just as the liver does. The kidneys also regulate protein levels in the blood, glucose concentration (via communication with the pancreas and liver), and blood pressure.
The two accessory organs which aid in detoxification are the small and large intestines. Both of these digestive organs absorb and differentiate useable food matter from food matter has no nutritional value. Without these organs, the body would quickly become burdened with substances that lack any real nutritional use. Also, the body would quickly lose water balance as the intestines serve a very important role in keeping your body hydrated for biological functioning.
The problem today with the body’s natural detoxification system is that we are constantly overloaded with unnatural chemicals. These chemicals come from the foods we consume, the air we breathe, the clothes we wear and the tools we use to live. The human body evolved in a natural environment void of the thousands of chemically engineered toxins we are exposed to today.
The human body needs natural high-quality raw materials to effectively repair and maintain health. Unfortunately, we are exposed to toxins that poison the raw materials and can damage our body at its core. Boosting your body’s natural detoxification system can help rid you can get back on track for full-body health.
