Natural Remedies For Phlegm and Sore Throat

Posted on 26. Nov, 2008 by admin in Natural Remedies, Simple Health Tips

Common illnesses like flu, cold, sore throat can lead to serious illnesses and diseases if not treated with care. Of course one could always visit the doctor or eat medicine. Recently, I was not sleeping very well and soon, fell sick. This time round, I was determined not to see doctor and allow it to heal naturally. And I did it.

Phlegm Symptoms

In my case, it started off as an uncomfortable at the throat. Whenever I tried to swallow anything, it would felt that there is something stuck in my throat. In the past, it will usually turn into phlegm after a few days and this time round it really did. Although it is not as bad as sore throat, one still needs to take care of the body or it will turn into something worse in the future.

After 1 or 2 days, green phlegm began to formulate especially when I woke up early in the morning. I started to sneeze and before I knew it, I was down with flu. In fact, if you face the same symptoms as me, it usually means that you have eaten too ‘heaty’ food such as chocolates, fried food, potato chips etc. And after eating so much ‘heaty’ food, you also had cold water or very sweet stuff.

You will feel your throat and your nose full of germs and you maybe feeling giddy, sleepy, or even having a fever.

Foods to avoid

If you face the symptoms as what I went through, these are the foods that you should avoid in order to alleviate the illness.

  • sweet foods – like cakes, white sugar, honey,
  • phlegm inducing fruits – bananas, oranges, plums, grapes, watermelon (does not seem to help)
  • ‘heaty’ food – fried stuff, grilled foods, oily, greasy foods
  • soft drinks
  • cold food or drinks
  • chickens, eggs, ducks, pork
  • spicy foods
  • dairy products
  • excessive refined wheat products (usually contained a lot of sugar)
  • peanuts

Foods that help you to reduce the phlegm

One of the most effective fruits that helped me to reduce the phlegm is drinking concentrated lemon juice. It’s essential to note that this method is useful when your phlegm is green in color.

In the morning, I would drink mixed fruit juice that contains carrot, lemon, and tomatoes. After drinking it, you will feel that it provides relief for the throat for a long time.

Besides the juice, whenever my throat feels terrible, I would squeeze some lemon into a cup and drink directly from it. After drinking the lemon, my throat suddenly feels cleared of all the phlegm. Although it does not heal my throat completely, it feels much better. This was recommended to another friend who had the same symptoms and she felt much better after drinking too. I would squeeze lemon and drink it twice a day – once after breakfast, and once before I sleep (so I can sleep well throughout the night).

Asian Chinese have also wonderful natural cure for common illnesses like phlegm and coughs. If you happen to be able to buy some ready made tea from Chinese medical practices, it will help tremendously in healing your illnesses. In some countries, they sell teas such as almond with herb tea, ginger tea, and other chinese teas can help in alleviating your phlegm.

You can also make your own ginger tea. Simply cut a few slices of ginger, and boil it. Just 1 or 2 cups of water would be enough to boil the ginger. If you like to make the ginger tea more concentrated, simply add more slices of ginger. After the ginger tea has boiled, you can add in some brown sugar. (Preferably without sugar because sugar generally make your phlegm worse).

I hope this would benefit you if you find yourself falling sick. Feel free to give any comments or feedback whether these natural remedies work for you.
