Blueberry Juice – A Super Weight Loss Juice?

Blueberries have always been a staple when it comes to a list of foods that help in losing weight. People had always believed that the fruit’s nutritive profile is effective in helping a person feel fuller longer and enhancing the many effects of vitamin C, which has something to do with shedding off excess pounds.

Recently, Canadian researchers found out that blueberry juice, with the addition of a certain bacteria, diminished hyperglycemia in diabetic mice. In addition, young pre-diabetic mice which received the juice were protected from later on developing obesity and diabetes.

Modified Blueberry Juice

The blueberry juice given to the laboratory mice during the research is actually the biotransformed kind. Biotransformation is simply the resulting modification to a compound, brought about by a certain organism. The bacteria Serratia vaccinii, a bacterial strain obtained from the skin of the fruit itself, was used to alter the composition of the blueberry juice, yielding the resultant findings.

“Biotransformed blueberry juice may represent a novel therapeutic agent,” said senior author Pierre S. Haddad, a pharmacology professor at the University of Montreal’s Faculty of Medicine, in the International Journal of Obesity in August of this year. “These mice were an excellent model that closely resembles obesity and obesity-linked type 2 diabetes in humans,” he added.

Enhanced Antioxidant Effects

According to the study, the biotransformation of the blueberry juice boosted the natural antioxidant properties of the fruit. The laboratory mice used in the research were genetically inclined to developing obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and resistance to insulin. However, when given the modified blueberry juice in a span of 3 days, it has been found out that the blood glucose levels of the mice fell by 35%.

Once further researched and developed, the benefits of this super blueberry juice may one day be used by people in fighting off obesity, hypertension and diabetes. The laboratory mice used exhibited the propensity to developing type 2 diabetes. Once also known as adult-onset or non-insulin dependent diabetes, it is becoming increasingly common among children and teens in the US, especially those who are overweight.

Link to Weight Loss

For years now, many weight loss experts believed in the power of blueberries to help those with obesity problems achieve success in the seemingly unending fight against the bulge. Blueberries are rich in flavor and nutrients, but without excessive caloric content. The fruit is a great source of vitamins C and E, manganese and both soluble and insoluble fiber like pectin. Pectin provides invaluable weight loss assistance, since it helps in slowing down the emptying of the stomach’s content, making one feel fuller longer.

Blueberries are also known to be loaded with antioxidants, which neutralize free radicals in the cells and tissues. In February of this year, researchers at Tufts University conducted a study on 60 different fruits and vegetables for their antioxidant potential. The study revealed that blueberries had the highest antioxidant contents. In April of this year, another research conducted at the University of Michigan’s Cardioprotection Research Laboratory had shown that rats that were regularly fed blueberries lost abdominal fats, even when supplied with a high-fat diet.
